The 2023 Santorini from Vassaltis Winery has just arrived, and we love it. Its mineral character mingles with concentrated fruit and subtle floral notes, making it utterly captivating.
Call them daring, call them visionaries: three young men, Giannis Valambous, Ilias Roussakis, and Giannis Papaikonomou, dared to invest money and countless hours of personal effort, during Greece’s crisis, in an island whose vineyards are constantly shrinking in favor of tourism development.
One of Santorini’s newest wineries is back with an Assyrtiko that has already established itself among the island’s finest and conquered the world. Named after the black volcanic rock formed when basaltic lava cooled after covering the island of Santorini following the volcano’s eruption nearly 4,000 years ago, Vassaltis Winery is now ready to produce great wines and welcome the island’s countless visitors.
The 2023 Santorini from Vassaltis Winery gives the island and Assyrtiko the starring role. The exceptionally low yield, not exceeding 150–200 kilos per stremma, ensures concentrated fruit. A six-month stay on the lees, with regular batonnage, has given it body and complexity, making it an exceptionally enjoyable Santorini to drink now or in five years. Rich and opulent, it perfectly embodies the island’s mineral character, vying for a place among the great names.
Drink it now or wait five years. The decision is entirely yours.
