Beaujolais Nouveau
The first wine of 2023
According to an old custom in Lyon’s bistros, immediately after All Saints’ Day, they would serve Beaujolais from the new vintage (so it would be no exaggeration to say that Beaujolais Nouveau was born in Lyon’s bistros).
When World War II brought a large number of artists and intellectuals to Lyon, seeking to escape the German occupation of Paris, they discovered and fell in love with the custom of drinking fresh Beaujolais, and brought it back with them to Paris. The tradition had begun, and it was not long before the whole world was talking about Beaujolais Nouveau. The day the wine arrived at bistros, wine shops, and restaurants became such a major event that it sends wine lovers’ anticipation soaring until they can taste their first glass of Beaujolais Nouveau.
Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé
This is the slogan that takes center stage every year on the third Thursday in November! Five words that build excitement and inform wine lovers around the world of the new wine’s arrival. Written in the window of a bistro in Lyon in 1951, it caught the eye of Louis Orizet, a poet and writer, who popularized it and made it the slogan of an entire region. In 1954, the slogan "Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrive" was first adopted as the producers’ banner, and its fame spread beyond the narrow boundaries of Beaujolais. And although half a century has passed since then, the unveiling of the new vintage continues to hold its fans’ interest year after year. The wine itself, too, retains its liveliness and freshness, despite having been in the spotlight for half a century. Only a few days remain until the first wine of the new vintage makes its official debut.
THE WINE
Its color is ruby red with vivid violet highlights, deep and very intense. On the nose, red fruits, sweet cherry, and a fairly pronounced, delicate hint of clove are clearly discernible. Aromas of blackberry, cherry, and blackcurrant dominate the palate, underscoring its origin - the Gamay grape variety - and Nouveau’s aromatic finesse. It is soft and aromatic, with refreshing acidity and a pleasant jam-like finish. It is a wine full of charm and character.
