This remarkable fruit comes from Illicium verum, an evergreen tree native to Vietnam and China. The oil contained in this fruit is the same as that in traditional anise, which is why their aromas are so similar. This oil is called anethole.

Feel free to try it in hot drinks, marinades, seafood dishes, soups, and broths. You can remove it before serving, as it is not edible.
