Περιγραφή

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is an aromatic annual herb in the mint family. It is native to India and Iran, but is now cultivated in many parts of the world. In Greece, it is one of the most common plants grown at home. Its leaves are used dried as a seasoning and to make herbal infusions. They contain an essential oil, whose main components are linalool and methyl chavicol, which is used in perfumery. Basil is used as a herb because it is believed to be a good diuretic and to soothe stomach aches and headaches. In ancient times, crushed basil leaves were used as a poultice after bites from insects, scorpions, or snakes. Basil extract has beneficial effects in cases of stomatitis and cold sores. It is also recommended for migraines, headaches, mild nausea, and morning sickness. Basil essential oil is extracted from the whole plant; it is almost transparent and has a sweet, spicy scent. It affects nearly every system in the body. It stimulates the nervous system, combats stress and mental fatigue, and helps with concentration. It also relieves coughs and colds. Since basil has antiseptic properties, soaking its leaves in water for a long time prevents the water from going moldy. For this reason, the Church uses basil to bless water. In cooking, basil can be used fresh or dried, and its aroma is somewhat like that of anise. It adds fragrance to various grilled dishes, salads, boiled dishes, tomato-based stews, soups, etc., and goes particularly well with sauces based on fresh tomatoes. In general, it should be added toward the end of cooking, as high temperatures destroy its flavor. In Italian cuisine, pesto pasta sauce is based on basil. The leaves can be stored dried in airtight glass jars or in the freezer. Basil’s most important nutrients are vitamins A, B, C, and K, iron, calcium, fiber, manganese, tryptophan, magnesium, and potassium.
