Grenache (Garnacha) is a red wine grape variety widely grown in France, Spain, Australia, and the United States. It is particularly versatile both in the vineyard and in the winery, which explains why it is one of the most widely planted grapes in the world.
Grenache is the French (and internationally recognized) name for the variety, but it has a number of synonyms. In Spain, where it is one of the country's leading varieties, it is known as Garnacha, and in Sardinia it has been known for centuries as Cannonau.
In France, Grenache is widely planted in the southern Rhône Valley and throughout Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon.
In Spain, Garnacha is the second most planted red grape variety, behind only Tempranillo. It is grown in almost every region of Spain, but mainly in the north and east – it is the principal variety in the renowned wines of Priorat.
